With winter coming, one needs to give some thought to moving indoors. It’s nice to spend time out in the garden, tending to your plants and perhaps spending some time with your fountain, but not when it’s cold outside or there’s snow on the ground.
When it’s winter, you should be indoors and that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean that you have to abandon growing things. There are indoor ways of growing herbs and other plants, and as time goes on and technology improves, it’s getting easier and easier to do. You’ll also find that you’ll get better results, because there are now new “smart” growing systems that can help you have a green thumb even if you’re all thumbs.
One new system is called Ava Byte. It’s a pun, as in “have a bite.”
The countertop system includes a water management system and built-in LED lighting that the system controls automatically. The company claims less water usage than with conventional growing and growth rates of up to three times that of normal.
The Ava Byte system measures 18 inches long by 5 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall and weights about four pounds. The lighting bar is adjustable and can go as high as 21″ tall to accommodate plant growth.
The device is also capable of interfacing with Alexa, Google Home, or the Apple Homekit so you can keep tabs on your plants remotely. The Ava Byte app will let you know if it’s time to add water.
An even more interesting feature is that Ava Byte has a built-in high definition camera. That means that you can not only keep track of your plant growth, but you can actually see it on your computer or smart phone.
Planting with Ava Byte is easy, as you don’t need to use soil. You use pre-seeded “pods” that you can purchase from teh company. These pods include seeds and nutrients, so all you need to do is add water.
You can grow tomatoes, herbs, salad greens, peppers, berries, mushrooms, edible flowers, microgreens, medicinal herbs, tea leaves, saplings, aloe vera, root vegetables, and more.
While the initial purchase of Ava Byte includes 5 pods, you can, of course, buy additional ones if you like.
At the moment, Ava Byte is not yet shipping. Ava Byte was funded through Indiegogo and received nearly 400% of the requested funding. At the moment, they’re saying that they expect the finished products to ship in the second quarter of 2018.
Prices for the full Ava Byte kit start at about $229. This includes the basic system, power supply, high definition camera and a 5 pack of pods. You’ll be able to confirm the type of plants that you receive prior to delivery.
Not everyone is successful at trying to grow plants, especially edible ones. That’s just how it is. But Ava Byte simplifies the process and makes it hard to mess it up. The pods have everything the seeds need to grow. The microprocessor-controlled system handles lighting and runs the water pump when necessary.
All you need to do is pay attention to the app that tells you when to add water and pay attention again when it tells you that it’s time to harvest your “crops.” In the meantime, you can watch your plants grow.
